Moorgate - The Complete Ceilidh Band

About Moorgate

Moorgate has been in existence for a number of years. The band has some reserve members and the line-up may vary depending on who is available. Usually, however, it comprises 3 players + caller:

Richard – clarinettist. In the mid-1970s he discovered that tunes were out there needing to be learned and played and he's been doing this ever since, from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean. The things he plays in this band are mostly British, from around the Pennines and northwards. When not playing, he's responsible for “TuneBook Live!” (at, a website full of tunes (this used to be the well-known "Richard Robinson's Tunebook", but now it includes other peoples' tunes too). He freely admits he needs to Get Out More.

Simon – melodeon and harmonicas. Simon has been playing these instruments for decades, in folk clubs, at sessions and particularly with dance bands. He is a graduate of the acclaimed Leeds University School of Music – he can make instruments as well as play them! His melodeon playing provides the basic driving melody for the band, varying that on some numbers with the harmonica.

Tony – guitar, occasional songs. Tony's interest on folk music has, as he puts it, “always been there – I sang folk songs and shanties as a child in north Liverpool”. He started playing the guitar at the age of 18 (“a bit late, but that’s when I could afford to buy one”) and began playing for folk dancing in 1981. He provides rhythm guitar for a few bands and is also one half of “The Duo – from folk to Floyd”.
